Automotive Maintenance Tips for National Car Care Month

April is National Car Care Month! It’s a great time to do car maintenance that was avoided during the winter months, and to prepare for the upcoming spring and summer travel seasons. Here are five general car care tips to keep your vehicle safe and running properly this season and many more.

Springtime Car Maintenance Checklist:

1. Check Tires

As the rainy season approaches, it is essential to have tires that will keep you and your family safe.

  • Inspect your tires for tread wear. Any tire that is 2/32 or below should be replaced.
  • If you have winter tires on your vehicle, it’s time to take them off and store them for next year.
  • Make sure the tire pressure is correct. Rising and falling temperatures play a role in the pressure of your tires, and having tires inflated properly ensures maximum performance and vehicle handling.

2. Replace Wiper Blades

Are your wiper blades squeaking or leaving streaks on your windshield? These are signs that your wiper blades should be replaced. Spring oftentimes brings plenty of rain, and having good wiper blades will help you see better. According to the Motorist Assurance Program, changing your wiper blades every year is recommended.

3. Inspect Brakes

Your vehicle’s brakes are one of the most critical systems on your vehicle, so you want them to function at their very best. It’s important to have them checked regularly before they become so worn they cause additional damage and are difficult to repair. Symptoms of worn brakes include: z

  • Grinding or growling
  • Squeaking or squealing
  • Soft brake pedal
  • Pulling to one side when you brake
  • Vibration or pedal kickback

Tire Choice offers FREE brake checks to help maintain the health of your vehicle. If you end up needing new brake pads or rotors, our technicians can help you choose the right option for your vehicle and driving style.

4. Proper Vehicle Alignment

If you live in an area with freezing rain or snow, your roads are going to have potholes that typically develop by springtime. If you hit one of these potholes, your vehicle is at risk of being out of alignment. If your vehicle pulls you to the left or right, it’s time to check the alignment. If you don’t, you could increase wear on your tires, decreasing their lifespan.

5. Get an Oil Change

Gearing up for warm-weather road trip? Protect your car’s engine with regular Valvoline™ oil changes. Generally, most vehicles require an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles although some manufacturers specify 5,000-mile intervals. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for specific maintenance guidelines regarding oil frequency.

6. Top Off Fluids

Your vehicle has various fluids that require inspection, including coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. The vehicle manufacturer may suggest topping them off or even replacing these fluids as part of the car’s maintenance schedule.

It’s important to be familiar with the regular maintenance required to keep your vehicle running properly.
