- Tire pressure: Always check when the tires are cold, before you start driving. The correct PSI for your vehicle is printed on a sticker inside your driver’s door frame not on the sidewall of the tire itself.
- Tread depth: Use the penny test. Push a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head pointing down. If the top of his head is visible above the tread, depth is below 2/32” get those tires seen to before this trip.
- Spare tire: Make sure it’s properly inflated and that your jack and lug wrench are in the vehicle.
- Sidewall condition: Scan for cuts, cracks, or bubbles especially if your tires are more than five years old.
Pro Tip: Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI with every 10°F temperature change. Driving from Florida’s coast into cooler elevations? Take a minute to recheck your pressure at a fuel stop along the way.
2. Oil & Engine Fluids
Southern summers are hard on engines. Before a long trip, spend two minutes checking under the hood.
- Engine oil: Check the dipstick for level and color. Dark, gritty oil that’s past its useful life should be changed before the trip, if you’re within 1,500 miles of your next interval, don’t wait.
- Coolant/antifreeze: Running low on coolant is a reliable way to end up overheated on the highway. Check the reservoir and add as needed.
- Brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid: Top off all three before you pull out.

3. Brakes
Higher speeds mean longer stopping distances. Before any road trip, listen carefully when you slow down.
- Squealing, grinding, or metallic scraping when you apply the brakes
- A pulsing or vibrating feeling through the brake pedal

6. Belts & Hoses
